
Whirlpool State Park is located on the American side of the Niagara River, just a few miles north of Niagara Falls, near Lewiston, in Niagara County, New York. It is located to the south of Devil's Hole State Park and to the west of Deveaux Woods State Park.
Whirlpool State Park has two levels the upper, or street level has many overlooks with spectacular views of the swirling waters of the rapids, the whirlpool and the Niagara River Escarpment. Visitor’s picnic and children use the playground at this level. The lower or river level is accessible by walking the 300 feet of trails and steps that descend into the gorge. This level has several nature trails and access for fishing.
Whirlpool State Park offers some of the most spectacular fishing in the Niagara Region. Major fishing journals and television shows have called this park one of the premiere freshwater fishing locations in the country.
Some of the most extreme rapids in the world precede the whirlpool State Park. A great hiking trail is available north of the parking area down to the whirlpool and rapids. The hike from the parking area to the whirlpool takes 30 minutes, and 40 minutes to get back up. The park at this particular area provides a superb hike.
The Whirlpool State Park is open year-round. Sections of the gorge trail may not be safe during times of heavy rain or snow. The restrooms are open from mid-April through late October. Best season to visit the park is probably autumn, mainly for the foliage and fishing. One can also visit in the summer months to get away from the tourist crowds at the Falls. The park opening hours are from dawn to dusk and admission to this natural beauty is Free.
